Creativity and innovation in the workplace are inspired by three basic mindsets: Belief; Prioritisation; and Courage. Believe; Prioritise; Be Bold. Jeff Ramos, Managing Director of The Garage, has implemented a programme designed to help employees innovate. In his view, employers must believe in the ability of their employees to have great ideas that can grow their companies. They must clearly communicate to their employees that creativity and innovation are top priorities and make room for them. And when good ideas roll in, they must have the courage and actually implement it. Because if you're not willing to disrupt your own business ideas, someone else will.
This is extremely valuable advice for accelerating creativity and innovative thinking among your employees. But how do you implement it practically? Well, just like our universe, creativity is about space and time. And constant innovation is the key.
Uninspired workers don't simply announce in the office one morning "I have an idea!" They need a consistent role model. And the best way to show your commitment to their creativity is to create a creative space
I don't (necessarily) mean scribbling graffiti on the walls and putting fireman's poles down the hall. A creative and innovative space is a multi-functional space. It accommodates the different ways of working preferred by the different personalities who work in your company. An innovative, creative space also allows you to change your working style throughout the day.
1. there's an impromptu brainstorming session where three team members need an office meeting pod with a table that doubles as a whiteboard and lots of cups of tea to burst with ideas.
2. 2. You get a call from a financier and need to duck into a phone booth to take a confidential call outside the open plan office.
3. 3. Members from five different teams are working intensively and they need a multi-purpose project table to work together over a few days.
4. 4. A client pops in to check on the progress of your design and you need an AV media table to present and discuss what's happening.
5. Despite your lush office chair, your doctor says that sitting all day ruins our backs, so you kick that chair back and lift your standing desk up for a fresh perspective.
By opening up your workplace to flexible possibilities, you also encourage your employees to share their ideas and express their creativity. The physical space your employees occupy on a daily basis has a huge impact on their adventurous mindset. Refresh the area every so often with new and helpful furniture to show them that you have a growth mindset.
Next, provide time for your employees to express their creativity. This is where the "20% strategy" of progressive companies like Google comes in. The idea is simple. They encourage employees to spend 20% of their time working on passion projects related to Google. Microsoft hosts the world's largest hackathon every year. Their employees are given free rein to develop their own ideas. These ideas are reviewed by experts and the good stuff is guaranteed sponsorship for further development. Both are incredibly effective strategies for using your time to accelerate innovation in your company.
